Our 2024 Nebraska Justice Summit Keynote:
Engaging Citizens, State Decision Makers, National Experts, Politicians, Judges, Lawmakers, Law Enforcement, & Advocates Around Justice Reform and Minority Disproportionality.
Twelve years ago, the Iowa Summit on Justice & Disparities was founded to address Iowa’s notorious distinction of ranking number one in the nation for disproportionately incarcerating African Americans and other minorities. Over the years, through the work of dedicated advocates, engaged officials and keen practitioners we have seen slight improvement and Iowa now ranks number 6 in the nation for disproportionality.
In 2024, the Justice Summit is launching in Nebraska. 2021 data from the Sentencing Project shows that Nebraska incarcerates Black Citizens at a rate of 9 times that of the White incarceration rate, placing Nebraska among the top 10 states in the country for this disproportionality. Other minority groups including the Native and Latinx communities are also critically overrepresented and the juvenile justice system is also displays alarming disparities.
We know that Nebraska can do better. This summit serves as an annual check in for the progress that we can make together.
WE MUST WORK TOGETHER TO CHANGE THIS!
